 MAT-SE Online! BASICS

MAT-SE Courses

After you're accepted into the Science Education Program (or another UTTC program for that matter), it's time to get registered for your coursework. The 'basic' courses are designed to maximize the power of the current course management system (BlackBoard) and to minimize the differences among course navigation issues. The idea is to focus on the content and your learning, not the technology or interfaces!

MAT-SE Online! courses follow the UTD Academic Calendar for the respective semester in which you are enrolled. (If you're taking electives or other courses offered via UTTC from other UT-System institutions, be advised that they will follow that campus' calendar, which is not necessarily the same as UTD's calendar.) Although the course may open before the actual semester start, the instructor is not required to be 'in the office' until the official first day of class.

If you have questions before the semester starts, please route your call through the Science Education Program office so that they can be addressed as soon as possible.

Of course, UTTC can provide assistance if you are not able to access your course(s) as they become available. Verify your UTD standing in SIS and be aware that it may take a day or so for your account to updated at UTTC due to polling schedules. Otherwise, Student Services Support is available via phone and email. Student Services-related questions will be answered during business hours (central time) with trained professionals prepared to individually guide you through the online process from registration to library services. Use the UTTC Enrollment links for more information about enrollment in academic courses.

As a graduate student, you are expected to assume responsibility for your own learning. This type of self-discipline is especially important for distance learners. To give you an idea of how this program is designed, take a few minutes to reflect on what science education is all about...

  Teaching 'Penny Ante' Science
Drs. Fifer and Ledbetter have written over 300 hands-on, inquiry-based science activities. They are published in the "Penny Ante Science" collection. You will experience many of these activities in the MAT-SE Online! courses.

UTTC course authors follow The Principles of Good Practice to ensure that your online learning experience is equal to (if not better than) that which you would experience in a face-to-face setting. More specific to the MAT-SE Online! program, a broad familiarity with the following common course navigation 'basics' will help get you off to a good start once you do have access to your core course(s):
