Science Education Program

UTD | Science Education Realizing the Potential

In UTTC terminology, UTD is your 'host campus'. The Science Education Program offers this online program and will award your MAT-SE degree with the help of UTTC and UTD! As you probably already know, the mission of the Science/Mathematics Education Department is to provide ongoing, professional education for science and mathematics educators. The vision of the Science/Mathematics Education Program is to produce recognized leaders in science/mathematics education who have a positive impact on the mathematics and science education of students. Established on a solid foundation of scientific research and academic excellence, this vision is supported through the following program goals:

To promote comprehensive Mathematical and Scientific Knowledge and Understanding by producing:

  • skilled and knowledgeable science and mathematics educators. educators capable of transferring their knowledge to adults and to children.
  • educators with depth of knowledge in science as well as in science education. educators with depth of knowledge in mathematics as well as in mathematics education.

To use and contribute to current Educational Research and Methodology by producing:

  • qualified researchers within the fields of science and/or mathematics education. educators and researchers who can use cutting edge research to make a difference in science and mathematics education.
  • educators who can apply their research to the classrooms.

To develop and support Professional Awareness and Involvement by producing:

  • forward thinkers who can change the course of science and mathematics education for the benefit of all children. educators who can inform the public as to the best methods for teaching science and mathematics to children.
  • researchers who can instruct pre- and in-service teachers in the best methods for teaching science and mathematics to children.

Regarding the importance of science education these days, UTD President Dr. David E. Daniel addressed ‘Science and Math from a Global Perspective* in the Center for Science Education Research's 2005-06 Seminar Series for Life-Long Learners. In his presentation, Daniel, a civil engineer and member of the prestigious National Academy of Engineering, explored the causes of and solutions to the global challenge to America’s longstanding pre-eminence in the fields of science and mathematics. * Requires free RealPlayer plugin.
