 UTD Services

NetID & eMail

The University of Texas at Dallas can now supply may services to students over the World Wide Web. However, many of these services require some kind of authentication to maintain security or satisfy licensing agreements. This means that all users must have a secure login and password before obtaining access to these services. At UTD, your NetID and password give you access to all services. Since the NetID is automatically created, there is no paperwork to fill out, no waiting for data to be entered in a NetID database, and you can activate the NetID over the World Wide Web at any time. Most of the details can be managed through a central, secure site (https://netid.utdallas.edu) - note the 's' in 'https'.

Your NetID is a code name that uniquely identifies you to the UTD computer systems. It never changes, and will follow you throughout your time at UTD, even if you leave for a while and return. When you first begin your association with UTD, you will be asked to activate the NetID as soon as possible by providing your password. Thereafter, you will use the NetID and password to access UTD campus computer resources, including e-mail, access to various campus web servers, and access to Unix servers if needed.

Your NetID is created when your user account is created. This happens when you are enrolled as a student in the current semester. This NetID is not activated until you supply a password through an online application. The NetID can be activated one time only online. You will be asked to accept the usage agreement, which outlines your responsibilities in using UTD computing resources. Then you have the opportunity to establish your password. It is recommended that you activate your NetID as soon as possible. You are responsible for what happens under your NetID, so be sure to claim it for your control right away.

Remember the password you establish, because no one can access it for you later!

Effective Fall 2004, UTD Faculty and Staff will only be allowed to correspond with students using their UTD email accounts. So... it is very important that you go to http://netid.utdallas.edu to establish or maintain your official UTD computer account!

If you won't be checking your UTD email address on a regular basis, set up automatic forwarding of your UTD email account to another email address RIGHT NOW!

Along with the creation of the NetID is the creation of a PEA (personalized e-mail alias). This is UTD's attempt to give you an e-mail address that is more user-friendly than the NetID. The PEA can be changed. However, the PEA can only be used as an alternative e-mail address. The NetID and password will always be used for login.

If you have trouble getting your UTD accounts set up, don't hesitate to contact our Help Desk directly! (Remember to use EmbaNet for any and all UTTC questions though.) And definitely feel free to explore the other UTD Information Resources available to you as needed...
