PathFinders
The first battery of notebooks computers have
been named after the following notable personalities who provide inspiration and
pathways for our work in blazing new trails.
MS01:
Aldo Leopold (1887-1948)
Author, Conservationist, Scientist
"That land is a community is the
basic concept of ecology, but that land is to be loved and respected is an
extension of ethics."
Leopold Education Project is
a conservation and environmental education curriculum sponsored by Pheasants
Forever and based on the ethics and writings of Aldo Leopold.
MS02:
Ansel Adams (1902-1984)
Photographer, Conservationist
"Both the grand and the intimate
aspects of nature can be revealed in the expressive photograph. Both can stir
enduring affirmations and discoveries, and can surely help the spectator in
his search for identification with the vast world of natural beauty and the
wonder surrounding him"
The
Ansel Adams Curriculum Resource For Teachers presents a multifaceted view
of Adams and his accomplishments in the fields of photography and
environmental conservation and includes hands-on activities that teach
concepts relating to the arts, history, social studies and creative writing.
MS03:
Edward
Abbey (1927-1989)
Author, Conservationist
"The idea of wilderness needs no
defense, it only needs defenders."
MS04:
Rachel Carson (1907-1964)
Environmentalist
"If a child is to keep alive his
inborn sense of wonder, he needs the companionship of at least one adult who
can share it, rediscovering with him the joy, excitement and mystery of the
world we live in."
Rachel Carson Council's mission is devoted to fostering a sense of wonder
and respect toward nature and to helping society realize Rachel Carson's
vision of a healthy and diverse environment.
MS05:
Jacques Cousteau (1910-1997)
Oceanographer, Environmentalist
"What is a scientist after all? It
is a curious man looking through a keyhole, the keyhole of nature, trying to
know what's going on."
The
Cousteau Society teaches people to understand, love, and protect the Water
Planet for future generations. It carries on the work of its founder
Jacques-Yves Cousteau through Programs for environmental education, protection
and justice.
MS06: Jane
Goodall (1934-present)
Anthropologist, Conservationist
"Above all we must realize that
each of us makes a difference with our life. Each of us impacts the world
around us every single day. We have a choice to use the gift of our life to
make the world a better place - or not to bother."
The Jane Goodall
Institute advances the power of individuals to take informed and
compassionate action to improve the environment for all living things. With
Dr. Jane Goodall's words and example as guiding principles, the Institute
inspires hope for a brighter future.
MS07: Lady Bird
Johnson (1912-present)
First Lady, Environmentalist
"The environment is where we all
meet; where we all have a mutual interest; it is the one thing that all of us
share. It is not only a mirror of ourselves, but a focusing lens on what we can
become..."
The purpose of the
Lady Bird Johnson
Wildflower Center is to educate people about the environmental necessity,
economic value, and natural beauty of native plants. While in the White House,
from 1963 to 1969, Lady Bird Johnson served as honorary chairman of the national
Head Start program and held a series of luncheons spotlighting women of
achievement. But she is best known as the determined environmentalist who wanted
roadside billboards and junkyards replaced with trees and wildflowers.
MS08:
Meg
Lowman (1953-present)
Biologist, Educator
"If nothing is done, the rain
forests of the world will no longer exist in 25 years."
A pioneer in the ecology of forest tree canopies, Meg Lowman climbs,
studies and sleeps in trees for a living. She's also a popular lecturer on
trips to the Amazon and Director of Research and Conservation at
Selby Botanical Gardens in
Sarasota. She's remarkably frank in this engaging memoir (Life
in the Treetops) about balancing her multiple roles as as scientist,
woman, wife and mom.
The TREE
Foundation is a not-for-profit organization dedicated to tree research,
exploration and education
MS09:
John Muir
(1838-1914)
Naturalist, Conservationist
"When we try to pick out anything
by itself, we find it hitched to everything in the universe."
The
John Muir Day Study Guide was prepared to help teachers commemorate John
Muir Day each April 21 with their classes. The guide is produced with the idea
that it may be used throughout the school year, integrated with a variety of
curriculum topics, to set a tone of caring about our environment.
MS10:
Theodore Roosevelt (1858-1919)
President
"The civilized people of today
look back with horror at their medieval ancestors who wontonly destroyed great
works of art or sat slothfully by while they destroyed. We have passed this
stage... Here in the U.S. we turn our rivers and streams into sewers and
dumping grounds, we pollute the air, we destroy our forests and exterminate
fishes, birds and mammals - not to speak of vulgarizing charming landscapes
with hideous advertisements. But at best it looks as if our people were
awakening."
MS00:
Zebulon Pike (1779-1813)
Explorer
"In the execution of this voyage I
had no gentlemen to aid me, and I literally performed the duties (as far as my
limited abilities permitted) of astronomer, surveyor, commanding officer, clerk,
spy, guide, and hunter; frequently preceding the party for miles, in order to
reconnoitre, and returning in the evening, hungry and fatigued, to sit down in
the open air, by fire light, to copy the notes and plot the courses of the day."

Housed within the School of Natural
Sciences and Mathematics, UTD’s Science/Mathematics Education Program provides a
unique opportunity for students to merge theory and practice. Building on
fundamental coursework in mathematics, science, society and technology, students
benefit from direct interaction with renowned experts and specialists in
biology, chemistry, geology, mathematics, physics, science/mathematics
education, as well as other related schools and departments. The principles of
hands-on inquiry and teacher-as-researcher transfer directly into the classroom
as students observe and participate in diverse educational settings. Real-world
experience integrates the core concepts of science and mathematics with the
subtleties of pedagogy that spring from allowing students to construct their own
knowledge.
The University of Texas at Dallas Teacher Development Center prepares
teachers who: have professional knowledge of their content area and teaching
field; utilize effective teaching practices that focus on the needs of the
learner, communicate effectively with students, parents, and other
professionals; are skilled in the use of instructional technology; value the
richness that cultural and individual experiences bring to the classroom; and,
are committed to the ethical practice of the teaching profession at all levels
of instruction.
