How did this rag-tag bunch become the greatest hockey team in 1980? After days since these boys won the gold for us, I am still pondering this question. These guys were supposed to get killed. They were only a group of guys who went to Boston University, and they were able to be all these professional team. Just truly amazing.

It all started a couple months ago when Herb Brooks, a NCAA coach, was chosen to become the coach of the 1980 United States Olympic hockey team. After months of tryouts, he was able to select a group of men. The hockey team was a decided underdog. They were rank 7th out of 12 teams in the first round. The dazed Americans were manhandled 10-3 by the Soviet Union in a pre-Olympic game.

At Lake Placid, Team USA first opponent was Sweden and after an amazing shot by Bill baker they where able to salvage a 2-2 tie. Team begin to start rolling after a 7-3 win with the Czechoslovakia. Soon their confidence grew when they defeated Norway, Romania, and Germany.
While the United States were stealing victories from these countries, the Soviets were steam rolling their opponents. They were undefeated in their group until the U.S. miraculously upset the Soviets. Then they beat the Finland, 4-2, to win the gold medal.
