This is what our nation needed in order to emerge from a trouble decade in the 70's. The 70's was an ugly end to the Vietnam War. People were burning flags in the streets, and patriotism was on a decline. That was only part of the problems we had to face. The unemployment rates were high, and don’t forget about the energy crisis. Many Americans were held hostage in Iran. Oh yeah! Who can forget about the demoralizing Watergate scandal?
We needed to feel good about something as a nation. The victory at Lake Placid was what the doctor order. We defeated our greatest rival, the Soviets.
This victory was more than a win; it was world changing event. It gave us Americans hopes and dreams. It told our children that determination and hard work can take them anywhere even to the top. A nation is united once again, and flags are flying up high now.
