What is Supply Chain Management?

Supply Chain Management (SCM) is concerned with the efficient integration of suppliers, factories, warehouses and stores so that products are distributed to customers in the right quantity, at the right time and at low cost. SCM integrates supply-and-demand management within and across companies. Because of this integration, the need for SCM expertise has grown dramatically in recent years.

The Master of Science in Supply Chain Management (M.S. SCM) degree program teaches design and management of industrial supply chains, including how to improve operations and how to resolve key issues. SCM graduates use their analytical decision-making skills and advanced knowledge to address supply chain concerns that arise as operations become increasingly more sophisticated. The program’s ultimate objective is to empower graduates to use SCM to transform business operations into competitive tools in the global economy.

What is IT outsourcing?

Information technology outsourcing (ITO) is the handing over to a third party of the management and operation of an organizationís IT assets and activities. ITO arrangements are complex and expensive and require significant and ongoing involvement from both the client and the supplier. The average length of an ITO arrangement is three to five years, sometimes ten years for larger arrangements, and such arrangements usually cost millions.

ITO research shows that, on average, twenty-five to seventy-five percent of most large organizationsí IT budgets are managed by third parties. However, reports indicate that client organizations repeatedly encounter difficulty in managing their relationships once the contract is signed. Therefore, outsourcing arrangements need to be carefully set up (configured) and effectively managed (operationalized) to ensure that they are both cost effective and successful. This also means that client organizations need to understand better the interrelated aspects of developing and managing an ITO arrangement.
