Course Objectives: Course content will be presented via learning modules:
This course is designed to foster active participation in the preparation and learning of content material as well as determination of the course grade.
Course Grades:
Students' grades will be determined based upon works completed for each content area. Each student will need to establish a goal based upon a menu of options. Each student will prepare a course contract that outlines the intended works and the point values. Contract forms must be agreed upon by Feb. 4, 2002. Grades will be assigned as follows:

(Items 1 - 3 mandatory)
1) Counseling Topics (100 points) - due 2/06/02
A choice of essay questions will be handed out the second week of class. Choose two questions; each answer should be no longer than two pages, double-spaced.
2) Adult Aural Rehabilitation Sourcebook (300 points) - due 4/29/02
This binder will serve as your reference for providing aural rehabilitation services to adult patients and should reflect material presented throughout the semester. The source book should include (but not be limited to):
3) Spring Intensive Aural Rehabilitation Conference (SPIARC) (100 points) To be held 4/12 - 4/13. Materials Due 4/10/02
In groups of 3 - 4 students, develop a session for SPIARC conference. Students will be responsible for session outline and content, materials, handouts, and other materials agreed upon by students and instructors. Some time will be allotted for this activity in class.
4) Choose ONE of the followings 300-point activities:
a) Callier Center Thursday Noon Hour Aural Rehabilitation - (300 points) - due one week after completion of clock hours - 6 students - one 4 week rotation each - two to three page summary of experience
b)Participation in Spring Intensive Aural Rehabilitation Conference 4/12 - 4/13
Class Leader (300 points) - Limit 6 students
Responsibilities include planning and implementation of one of six group sessions and activities (2 Friday sessions, 4 Saturday sessions; Leader must be present at his/her session).
c) Task Leader (300 points) - Responsibilities include carrying out specific needs for SPIARC such as planning ALDs, promoting conference, creating resource notebooks, conducting post-evaluation, etc. (Task leaders must be present during the time task to be completed.)
5) Choose any combination of the following activities up to a maximum of 1000 pts:
a) Case history and handicap/disability assessment of an adult hearing imparied individual - (100 points) - due 3/6/02
Indicate why you selected your assessment tools. Summarize findings and provide recommendations.
b) Review of Internet Support Groups and Resources for hearing impaired adults
(100 points) - due 3/6/02 - Limit 6 students
Critique content of at least 20 websites, appropriateness/accuracy, and ease of access for information presented; prepare handout for class
c) Adult Hearing Loss Support Groups (100 points) - due 3/6/02 - Limit 6 students
Attend one SHHH or Hearing Loss Support Group meeting and provide written summary relating to observations to class topics or readings. Indicate how might this information be beneficial in counseling and managing your patients.
d) Public Accomodations for Hearing Impaired/Deaf in Dallas area (100 points) - due 3/6/02 - Limit 6 students
Review availability of listening technology for hearing impaired/deaf in at least 20 venues. Prepare handout.
e) 30 minute power point presentation on a special population (includes 3-5 page paper) (100 points) - due last two weeks of class - Limit 8 students
e.g. tinnitus; elderly; pre-lingually deafened; unilateral hearing loss; sudden hearing loss; Alzherimer's (dementia); institutionalized (nursing home), deaf-blind, etc.
f) 30 minute power point presentation on any syllabus-related topic - clear topic with instructors (100 points) due dates vary - Limit 8 students
e.g. American with Disabilities Act; Assistive Listening Devices; Scales & Inventories; Auditory/Visual Traning, Conversation Training, etc.
Students will be responsible for preparing reading requirements, visual aids, and handouts.
g) Comprehensive Final Examination - (200 points) - Short essay questions to be given at the regularly scheduled final exam time.

Additional Information:
1) You will have a formal opportunity to evaluate the course during the semester but feel free to stop by to discuss any concerns regarding this course.
2) Additional Information - Incompletes will be given only in extenuating circumstances and must be requested in writing. Late assignments WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED and evidence of academic dishonesty will result in no credit for the exam or assignment. Academic dishonesty includes cheating, plagiarism, collusion, and falsifying academic records. Please consult the course schedule and catalogue for information on withdrawals, incompletes, and academic dishonesty.
3) Accommodations - If you require any modification to the class activities including lectures, discussions, exams, and assignments in order to accommodate specific learning needs, please notify us byt the end of the first week of class in person or by e-mail and provide appropriate documentation. We will be happy to make whatever arrangements are needed to facilitate learning and participation in the class.
