LAB ASSIGNMENT #1

SOUNDFIELD ACOUSTICS - PERSON

To observe intrasubject variability and effects of azimuth for measurements of ear canal resonance.

Mr. Brown has never worn a hearing aid. In fact, he is not sure he needs one. Recruit a Mr./Ms. Brown and measure his/her ear canal resonance for the right and left ears.

Procedure:

After calibration of speaker/mic positions for the probe-mic system, measure the ear canal resonance for the right and left ear with an input of a 70 dB SPL complex signal. For one ear measure the ear canal resonance with the speaker at three different azimuths.

Writeup:

1. Paste printouts on paper in an organized fashion with appropriate labels.

2. How close in agreement (in frequency and level) was the peak resonance between right and left ears? What explanations can you offer for any differences you observe between right and left ear resonance? What sort of control could you suggest to reduce variability?

3. If Mr. Brown is an appropriate candidate for an ITE but can only afford one, which ear would require less gain to compensate for the loss of the ear canal resonance? Refer to printouts and give exact numbers in your response.

4. How did the resonance change with azimuth? How might this affect measurement of soundfield thresholds?
