LAB ASSIGNMENT #6

SELECTING THE HEARING AID

Purpose:

To determine the appropriate amount of gain and output via a prescriptive procedure and adjust an appropriate BTE aid to use in a hearing aid evaluation.

Case:

Mr. Jones is a first time hearing aid user and has a variety of hearing losses depending on his personality. You will be given the loss he has on the particular day you are to see him.

Procedure:

Determine the amount of gain and maximum output for Mr. Jones’ loss according to a prescriptive approach other than POGO. Based on the predicted 2cc values necessary to achieve that amount of gain, select a BTE hearing aid and set the controls appropriately. Assume you are fitting with a closed mold. Run the aid to show that you have accomplished the desired gain.

Writeup:

1. For the octave frequencies 250 - 6000 Hz, list the thresholds, gain, and maximum output recommended by your procedure. Give a complete explanation of how these numbers were determined.

2. For the same frequencies show the predicted 2cc gain for the closed mold and the actual gain achieved for the aid you selected.

3. Attach the printout of the ANSI run to your report.

4. Discuss whether you met the target 2cc gain and if not, how you might accomplish that via earmold acoustics.
