CS 6390.502 Advanced Computer Networks-- Spring 2002—Sample Exam

Note: The number of questions will be different. I have put down 8 just to expose you to some problems.

1.      IPv6 does not use a checksum in its header. Why this is the case.

2.      Given a network topology (I am not giving one here), show how distance vector based routing algorithm runs. Show all the steps of the algorithm executed at two given nodes.

3.      What is tunneling? Describe the advantages and disadvantages of using tunneling.

4.      Given a routers forwarding table (I am not giving one here), find what the router does for a given set of packets with IP addresses i1, i2, …, in. (Again, I am not giving the forwarding table and the IP addresses.

5.      Why is ARP unnecessary with IPv6 if suggested IP addressing is used?

6.      Given a data rate of the slowest link of a TCP connection and the connection’s round trip delay, estimate how long it will take for the sequence numbers to wrap around. Ignore the header overheads.

7.      Explain how fair queuing works.

8.      What are some applications that can make use of SCTP?
