JAN BLAIR / NANCY MACKO
GLIMPSING ROMANIA

Jan Blair and Nancy Macko have collaborated to create their project Glimpsing Romania, a website with corresponding digital prints. The artists embark on a journey to Romania, to investigate archaeological sites outlined by Maria Gimbutas in her book Language of the Goddess. The artwork, combining images and text, functions as a traveler's diary and provides insights into the artists’ experience of everyday life in Romania. The text alternates between two narratives: one documenting their struggle to learn about the origins of a matriarchal culture; and the other referencing their frustrations and daily challenges as artist travelers seeking to meet their counterparts in Eastern Europe. For Blair and Macko the process of discovery and investigation, their collaborative effort, folds back into their visual documention of their journey.
