STEPHEN WILLIS

GIRL FOUND DEAD, 1998, duratrans, wood, glass, flourescent light, 9" x 11 1/2" x 6"

Stephen Willis fabricates crime scene images using photographic conventions associated with 1930s newspaper photojournalists such as Weegee. Fragments of these images are recombined digitally with headlines to lend an eerie authority to the fictional photograph. The montages function like documents, including elements such as the murder weapon, a map of the specific location, and a staged photograph of the crime scene. The work draws connections between the incidence of violence and crime in society and violent imagery constructed for Hollywood film and television.
