EPSON PRINTER 1270 or 1280

1) PREPARE FILE Flatten psd file and save this flattened file separately from your archived unflatted version of the image.

Select IMAGE/IMAGE SIZE: deselect resample and select constrain proportions

Enter a different number if required to change the IMAGE size, so it fits comfortable on your 13" x 19" paper, depending upon the relative height and width. (i.e. generally about a 1" or 2" border, with an overall image size of 10" x 16").

(If you need to UPSAMPLE, then reselect resample (in the Image/Image Size dialogue box) and choose "bicubic smoother,” from the pulldown menu. Enter in the larger dimensions and note the increase in both Image Size and File Size. Upsampling works best with images captured from a digital camera. But don't overdo it. Review the file at 100 percent enlargement to be sure that you are satisfied with the effects of upsampling.)

2) CHOOSE PAPER (CONSIDER SHEET SIZE AND SURFACE) AND PRINTER (1270 OR 1280)

In Photoshop, there are three selections:
PAGE SETUP, PRINT WITH PREVIEW, and PRINT under the File Menu.

NOTE: On the printer, use the large 13" x 19" backing sheets to provide extra support for your oversized prints; they are available in the lab (near the 1280 printer station). If the availability of printer ink is a problem, check with a Teaching Assistant first. If necessary, please forward an email via webct or waligore@utdallas.edu

A) PAGE SETUP: here you choose the paper size and select your printer.
Be sure that you have selected the option for 13" x 19" paper

STEP B: CHOOSE BEGINNER OR ADVANCED PRINT OPTIONS:

B) PRINT WITH PREVIEW (BEGINNER):

BEGINNER: OR, if you want to select the beginner's option you can choose Printer Color Management in the Color Management pulldown menu, to allow the Epson Printer software or driver to determine this change.

BEGINNER OPTION: 1280 OR 1270 PRINTERS

B) PRINT WITH PREVIEW (ADVANCED): Here you decide whether you want to choose an advanced option for printing (using profiles for a specific paper and printer) or a beginner's option.

ADVANCED: You can have Photoshop take over the task of deciding how the digital file will be rendered in the printing process by selecting the specific ICC profile from the Color Management pulldown menu in the Print with Preview dialogue box. (This option is only permitted with the 1280 printer.)

ADVANCED OPTION / 1280 PRINTER ONLY / SELECT SPECIFIC ICC PRINT PROFILE

C) PRINT : When you have make your selections in the Print with Preview Dialogue Box, you can now move to the Print command, which can be selected inside the Dialogue Box or from the Photoshop main FILE menu.

SELECT PRESET ADVANCED OR BEGINNER PRINTER SETTINGS for the Matte Heavyweight Epson paper. The are located under the PRESETS pulldown menu.

Once you have selected a PRESET, you can select PRINT.

Reviewing the summary is a helpful final step.

The dialogue boxes listed below provide information about the specific features selected by the presets. The use of the presets should limit your need to change these settings.

PRESETS:

Saved settings for beginning and advanced printing options have been created to facilitate the final steps. In the Print dialogue box, you can select variables to control your printing, in order to raise the resolution to 1440 dpi for example, or to avoid the setting for high speed. You can also select the paper type in this dialogue box, which is extremely important. Note the pulldown menu that allows for settings for color management, print settings, copies, summary, etc. The examples below provide an indication of how the Beginner and Advanced settings have been pre-selected to optimize print quality.

Notice the Copies & Pages pulldown menu, that provides access to the Color Management and Print Settings dialogue boxes listed below.

This setting in the Print Dialogue Box is for ADVANCED printing and NO COLOR ADJUSTMENT is selected.

For the BEGINNER, the selection under Color Management would be COLOR CONTROLS .

On the 1280 printer, this dialogue box will look the same for either beginning or advanced printing.

Note that a main difference between these two choices involves telling the printer to allow Photoshop to perform the calculations needed for printing (advanced) or allowing the Epson printer driver to perform the calculations (beginner).

The Advanced Printing option for Heavyweight paper includes the setting No Color Adjustment under the Color Management setting of the Epson Print Driver.

The Beginning Printing option allows for Color Controls under the Color Management of the Epson Print Driver, to allow the Epson printer driver to take over.

These settings, beginner or advanced, parallel those set in the Photoshop Print with Preview dialogue box. The 1280 printer provides additional ICC print profiles to allow for either setting.

For a fee various companies will produce a specific ICC printer profile for you to match your printer with a specific ink and paper.

D) THE FINAL PRINT

Let the print dry before judging it for critical color balancing. Try to work under a color balanced viewing area (5500 degrees Kelvin) or the sun (rather than flourescent or tungsten lighting which throws off your attempt to determine a neutral color balance). Ideally, let the print dry for an hour before moving it. You will want to let prints dry fully for 24 hours after you take them home to let the color set. Don't stack them; ideally lay them out on a table so they can dry completely.
