Introduction

   During the last several years, we have developed a unique method to map detailed geologic exposures in three-dimensions. This method essentially captures entire outcrops digitally and photographically in 3D, in global (GPS) coordinates.

 Key advantages are:

• Captured outcrop is entirely digital, photorealistic and measurable.
• Student can visualize geologic features in 3D from any angle.
• Digitizing (and therefore measurements) can be done on 3D models and compared to conventional 2D photos.
• Observer can "fly around" outcrop virtually, closely examining and measuring features on cliff faces that student could not easily (because of logistical or safety concerns) carryout otherwise (the "virtual field trip", photorealistic and in 3D).
• Conventional geologic information can be integrated into the 3D framework of the model, effectively converting 2D positioned data to 3D.
• Accuracy and resolution of models only dependent on specific equipment used in capture (lasers, GPS, cameras) but usually at decimeter to centimeter.
• The virtual field trip of a location can be made before the actual trip.
• The computer model can be taken into the field on a laptop to show students what they are seeing at the location at that time.
• The model can be shown to/used by students after the field to place their information.
• Allows a review of what they thought they saw and their interpretations.
