Doctor of Philosophy in Literature

Curriculum

The PhD in Literature program enables students to pursue topics which fall between the cracks of national literature programs. With strengths in the literatures of the United States, Latin America, Germany and China, the program is oriented around topics in modernism, translation, creative writing, literature and science, and visual culture.

The program provides students with a flexible, interdisciplinary context within which to pursue their studies, built on connections among specific courses and areas of interest. Each student plans an individual program of studies in consultation with an assigned advisor.

Literature is an interdisciplinary program of study. Besides coursework in Literature, all students must take two seminars each in both History of Ideas and Visual and Performing Arts. Students pursuing the PhD in Literature may, if their coursework supports it, submit a translation or creative writing project as part of their dissertation.
