Confucius Institute Held 51st Session of Confucius Salon

The Confucius Institute at UT Dallas held its 51st session of Confucius Salon on January 30, 2016 on campus. Professor Xiangyun Qiu, a visiting scholar from Yangzhou University, China, presented a talk entitled “Traditional Chinese Marriage Customs,” which captivated the audience of 40 people. First, she introduced the history of Chinese marriage by analyzing the bronze inscription “marriage,” which aroused great curiosities among the audience. With carefully chosen pictures, she elaborated on the match-making and betrothal practices, and engaged the audience through questions and answers. The climax of the talk came when she presented the wedding ceremony with the dazzling array of costumes and wedding procession. The audience was especially intrigued by and attracted to the custom of the weeping departure of the bride. Lastly, Professor Qiu ended the talk by offering her own observations on the impact of traditional customs upon the present life of Chinese people. The audience all said that they enjoyed the talk thoroughly.
