2015 Chinese Language Teachers Association (CLTA-TX) Annual Conference

The 2015 Chinese Language Teachers Association-TX (CLTA-TX) Annual Conference hosted by The Confucius Institute at UT Dallas on September 5th, 2015 was a big success. The theme of the conference was "Innovative and Practical Best Practices in Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language." Around 77 Chinese language teachers participated in the conference; 13 experts and teachers in Chinese language teaching shared their latest educational concepts, most efficient teaching methods, and experience with the participants.
The conference was initiated with a welcome address by Dr. Liang Siyan, the president of CLTA-TX. Mr. Yiqun Zhang, Chief Counselor of Education of China's Houston Consulate, delivered a speech on the contribution of Chinese language teachers to the increased mutual understanding between Chinese and American people. Professor Gu Ming Dong, director of the Confucius Institute at UT Dallas, welcomed the participants warmly.
The keynote address by Dr. Jianhua Bai was on a theme-based approach to teaching Chinese as a foreign language, which is built on both teaching practices and studies of language acquisition psychology. Dr. Qianyuan Zhang, Chinese director of Confucius Institute at UT Dallas, delivered an excellent lecture on the transmission of Chinese culture in language teaching. Dr. Randy Kluer, director of the Confucius Institute at Texas A&M University, talked about the development of Chinese teaching in Texas. Mr. Chaolin Chang, Principle of Mandarin Chinese Language Immersion Magnet School in Houston, shared their success and experience with the participants.
Dr. Meng Yeh, Ms. Janet Lin, Ms. Andrea Yang, Ms. Wang Fang, Ms. Ruihua Liu, Ms. Zhihong Han, and Ms. Chunji Xiong all presented to the audience their strategies and methods in cultivating students' critical thinking, childhood cognitive capacity, interactive learning, game in learning, etc.
The conference's success was marked with the increased mutual understanding and learning, as well as the promoted teaching proficiency and teamwork among the teachers.
