Description of Course:
This course prepares students for Advanced Visual Arts and/or Advanced Painting and explores traditional and nontraditional concepts and techniques of painting. Emphasis is on strengthening the development of personal vision, whether realistic, abstract, observational, conceptual, or hybrid. Lectures will discuss historical and contemporary artists.
In this studio workshop various concepts are catalysts for the investigation of a painted visual image/idea. This includes how a visual image/idea changes through its manipulation and variation of process, medium, tool, and presentation.
Topics may include color theory, 2D design, and the nature of representation. Visual problems, contemporary artists, historical examples, and creative process strategies are introduced, allowing each individual to begin investigating the various paths one may take when constructing a painted image, or a series of works.
Concepts are explored to push the boundaries of material, subject, vision, process and interpretation. Digital and analog tools as well as an image bank project encourage the student to pursue the expansive interior (dreams, imagination, sensory perception) and exterior world (observed forms, design, information, culture, advertising) as catalysts for visual imagery.
Class includes readings and research of contemporary painters to help assist with the understanding of the artist's intent, the critique, and the technical manipulation of paint.

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:
Pre-requisite: ARTS 2316 Painting Foundations. Students with painting experience are highly encouraged to enroll in ARTS 2316, a college level course, rather than ask for permission to skip ARTS 2316.
Studio Materials will be discussed the first day of class (suggested on syllabus and in class discussions.) A research project requiring the visit to local Galleries informs the final painting.
