Fall 2010 - Graduate Course Descriptions
Description of Course:
Taught by an active composer/conductor, this class provides opportunities for graduate instrumentalists (strings, woodwinds, brass, keyboard, percussion, plucked string), singers, dancers, actors, composers, lyricists, visual artists and video/performance artists to perform and create music for small and larger ensembles, plus multi-media and theater works. Music for past concerts has ranged from Medieval and Renaissance dances and motets to standard repertoire to experimental new works written for and/or developed by the ensemble. Concerts have included an evening of jigs, an evening of tangos, French cabaret and mariachi songs, chamber opera, ballet and a fully-staged commedia dell'arte pantomime.
Selected members of the group will perform in concert on campus, with additional off-campus opportunities, as available. Students performing on UTD's Musica Nova concert series join professional musicians and members of the community. Musica Nova guest artists have included members of the Dallas Symphony and Dallas Opera Orchestra and singers from the Dallas Opera, New York City Opera and Metropolitan Opera. This course is now open both to musicians and to non-musicians. Non-performing students will examine the process required for creating and performing and will acquire skills for understanding and verbalizing the non-verbal phenomenon of music. Work for non-performing students will center around readings and scholarly research/analysis or creative projects.
Format: weekly rehearsal and coaching plus historical/stylistic analysis

Attendance and Rehearsal Preparation – 50%
Artistic Quality – 50%
Grading Criteria for Non-Performing Students:
Quality of Selected Project – 100%
Specific Learning Objectives for Students:
1. Develop insights and techniques for recreating the composer’s intentions and developing interpretive insights in a variety of styles. (performing students)
2. Integrate feedback from coaching into one’s performance. (performing students)
3. Demonstrate an awareness of the structure and historical context of the music being performed (performing students)
4. Demonstrate an understanding of the terminology and techniques of music criticism. (non-performing students)
5. Demonstrate an understanding of music in an interdisciplinary context, relating examples of music to other arts and to the historical context in which it was written. (non-performing students)
6. Completion of special research/analysis projects related to music (non-performing students).
