Fall 2010 - Undergraduate Course Descriptions
Description of Course:
This course will consider the art of the seventeenth century through the culture, religion, and politics of France, Italy, England, Spain, the Spanish Netherlands, and the Dutch Republic. This course will be primarily concentrated on painting in the first half of the century, particularly the work of Caravaggio, Rubens, Gentileschi, Rembrandt, Velazquez, Van Dyck, Poussin, and Vermeer. The sculpture and architecture of Rome will also feature in the course.
Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:
Midterm; final; short papers due every two weeks; one longer visual-analysis paper.
