Description of Course:
This course examines the African-American experience in the United States from 1619 through the present. Prominent themes include the origins of slavery and racism; the consolidation of antebellum slavery after the American Revolution; the end of the Civil War and the beginning of Reconstruction; the Jim Crow South; black life in the urban North and the development of the modern Civil Rights Movement and its aftermath.
