History of Texas

Description of Course:

This course surveys the history of Texas from the pre-Columbian period to the present. Topics to be covered include: Native Americans, Spanish Texas, Mexican Texas, the Texas Revolution, the Republic of Texas, the Civil War and Reconstruction, the cattle industry, the oil industry, the Progressive Era, the Great Depression and World War II, and modern Texas.

Required Texts:

2nd edition of "Beyond Myths and Legends: A Narrative History of Texas" by Howell, Volanto, et al. (Abigail Press)
1st edition of "Voices of Texas" by Volanto -- a textbook supplement with primary source documents (Abigail Press)
3rd edition of "Sam Houston and the American Southwest" by Campbell
"Texas, Cotton, and the New Deal" by Volanto

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

No prerequisites; 3 exams; about 5 or 6 pop quizzes over textbook readings for that week; homework assignments from the textbook supplement.
