Description of Course:
This unprecedented course will be taught jointly by Dr. Richard Brettell of UTD and SMU Medieval Literature and History Professors Bonnie Wheeler and Jeremy Adams, with a roster of visiting scholars from around the country. The course will be held at the Dallas Museum of Art and students must join the DMA for the year (student memberships cost $40).
The course will look at the interdisciplinary context of "The Mourners: Medieval Tomb Sculpture from the Burgundy Court." Focus of a major exhibition at the DMA, the "mourners" are a sequence of masterful alabaster funerary sculptures from Dijon, France that embody the courtly, chivalric, monastic, and artistic aspects of the Burgundian court, which was among the most brilliant in late Medieval and early Renaissance Europe. The class will study the interwoven development of the political, social, religious, literary, and artistic strands of human culture in medieval France and neighboring countries that is embodied in these sculptures.
