Fall 2012 - Undergraduate Course Descriptions
Description of Course:
In Reading Media Critically, we will examine theoretical approaches to understanding, analyzing and participating in media projects. Using a range of communication theories, we will interrogate the relationships between media, identity, and society to analyze how media texts reproduce, challenge, or transform existing norms and power structures. The mass media focus makes this course fun with screenings and interesting discussions, but please be aware that it is reading and writing intensive. Reading Media Critically satisfies the advanced writing requirement for EMAC majors, so assignments emphasize analytical argumentation and professional writing skills.
Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:
Although specific assignments have not been determined, expect significant writing (and revision) and class presentations. Students should also expect to participate actively. The class will not include exams.
