Language is the cornerstone of any account of human nature. The field of linguistics uses the scientific method to reveal the nature of language. This course begins with an analysis of the sound system employed by language and builds to a big picture which includes the study of discourse analysis, dialects, and language acquisition. The knowledge acquired in this course is essential to anyone in the fields of education, literature, computer science, philosophy or psychology, as well as anyone interested in the study of what it means to be human.
