Description of Course:
The primary objective of this one hour credit course is to provide students with assistance in making effective career decisions. This will be accomplished through the use of career assessments, informational interviews, development of a career plan, as well as both practical and theoretical readings and exercises. Students will prepare resumes, develop effective interviewing skills, explore networking, and job search techniques. Course information will be conveyed through readings, homework assignments, internet searches, discussions, guest speakers, in-class exercises, presentations, and group discussions.

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:
Students explore their interests, personality and values through the completion of several formal & informal career assessments including the Strong Interest Inventory, Myers-Briggs Type Indicator and the Self-Directed Search. There are also several computer guidance programs referred to for occupational exploration including Choices, O*NET, the Vocational Biographies, and the Occupational Outlook Handbook.
Students learn about different styles of interviews and interview questions and have the opportunity to practice interviewing in class and outside of class using Perfect Interview a web based program.
Student develop an effective resume and cover letter that may be used when applying for internships, part-time jobs and full-time jobs.
Students explore a field they are interested in through conducting an informational interview and presenting to the group who they met with and what they learned.
Students have the option of either preparing a short paper about their career plan or attending several Career Center or A&H sponsored career-related events and writing Personal Reaction Papers about each event. option
