Course Title

Description of Course:

In the study of human nature, language is where the action is. Linguistics applies the scientific method to the study of language. This course will survey the major fields of linguistics, including: phonology and phonetics, morphology, syntax, semantics, discourse analysis, stylistics, language acquisition and dialects.

Some questions addressed in this course:

Do slang and text-speak lead to language decay?
Does the language you speak affect the way you think?
How can we precisely describe the language devices which writers use?
Do animals have language?

Curzan and Adams, How English Works, 3rd edition

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

2 exams, research paper, 5 homework assignments, online participation
