Description of Course:
Persuasion (COMM 4314) blends theory and practice to help students understand persuasive strategies in professional, public, and interpersonal settings. Putting the science of persuasion into practice is a complex art that does not lend itself to formulaic recipes. Therefore, this class uses a theoretical lens to frame practical applications by asking three main questions:
• How do attitudes work?
• How can we shift attitudes and change behaviors?
• How can we design messages to target these processes?
This theoretical approach allows students to strategize ways to increase their effectiveness as they craft persuasive appeals.

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:
Class activities blend lecture with discussion and exercises. Assignments vary each semester but generally include exams, written analytical assignments to assess theory, and a presentation to demonstrate strategic implementation of theoretical concepts. COMM 4314 satisfies the Written and Oral Requirement for the Certificate in Critical Communication Skills (C3).
