Spring 2015 - Graduate Course Descriptions
Description of Course:
This course will be a studio-based, creative workshop in which students will pursue their own creative work in a medium of their preference or expertise. An emphasis will be placed on developing an individual style with personal content using either painting, drawing, sculpture, ink jet prints, video, computer imaging or some hybrid forms. The student is expected to have had some prior experience in a medium of their choice (consult the instructor if unsure).
Various topics of the current art discourse in the visual arts will be investigated and discussed throughout the semester through current readings of art periodicals, films, and slide lectures. There will also be discussions from the assigned articles and texts, which cover current topics relating to content, theory, and studio practice of three contemporary artists. There will be periodic critiques of the students art work along with inquiry into the formality of its making as well as the content expressed. Studio workdays will be giving for each student to facilitate the creation of a focused body of work for group critique sessions. There will also be 1-2 days that each student will sign up to meet privately with the instructor to discuss more in depth their individual work.
Text to be announced. Some critical art reading will be giving periodically in class for discussions that are relevant to current topics in the art discourse.
Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:
1.Students will explore a medium of choice of which they have some expertise, while focusing on creating a personal vision. Along with content they will develop formal aspects and skill techniques to express their vision. The student will be graded on the content objective, creative application, effort, and critical assessment through your artist statement.
2. Students will develop visual perception and verbal analysis through class critiques and evaluations of projects. A critical analysis will follow in the form of group dialogues and evaluations forms on each others art works that are presented
3.Student will learn to write an artist statement to communicate verbally their visual ideas.
4.Students will develop a broader understanding of their art and its connection to art historically as well as current contemporary issues.
