Description of Course:
This course introduces students to media forms and practices in their historical contexts. It explores the emergence and development of different media from the invention of the printing press to our digital age. We will study the changing social, economic, and technological conditions to provide us with an historical understanding of the emergence of varied media and forms of communications such as books, art, movies, music, newspapers, telephones, radio, television and social media. We will investigate in particular the emergence of print culture, the enlightened Republic of Letters, modern entertainment, arts, and political activism.
