Spring 2015 - Undergraduate Course Descriptions
Description of Course:
This course surveys the history of the Islamic world, particularly the Middle East, from the fifteenth century to the end of World War I (1918) (or 1945, the end of World War II). This period witnessed a major transformation in the Middle East that Muslim rulers have predominantly controlled for centuries. With the eighteenth-century European expansion and colonialization, the outlook of this region started to change. The rise of nationalism and new ideologies drastically influenced both the cultural and political outlook of the societies. The reading and discussion of translated primary sources is particularly emphasized.
