Exploration of the Humanities

Description of Course:

Humans are storytellers, and many of the stories we tell follow similar patterns. In this class intended to demonstrate the relations among various forms of cultural expression, we will study three of these persistent narratives: “star-crossed lovers,” “revenge,” and “the quest.” One or more classic texts will serve as the core of each of these units, and we will examine a number of adaptations in a variety of artistic media.

Required Texts:

Course reader through University Readers.
William Shakespeare, Hamlet, The Pelican Shakespeare ISBN 9780140714548 & Romeo and Juliet, The Pelican Shakespeare, ISBN 9780140714845 (these texts are the most affordable with good notes; you may use another edition, but it must have a good scholarly apparatus).

Course Requirements/Evaluation Criteria:

Participation, three exams, analysis paper.
