Description of Course:
(1) DESCRIPTION OF COURSE:
This is an Intermediate Arabic-1 Language course intended for students who successfully completed the prerequisites (ARAB1312). The goal of this level is to bring excellence in vocabulary activation and perfection in speaking, listening, reading and writing skills. In this advanced level, students will also develop more cultural understanding and diversity of Arabic countries such as Levantine and Western parts of Arab world. There will be a greater emphasis on comprehension and production of spoken Arabic, offering a choice between Egyptian and Levantine dialect components in daily life transactions. This course will enable students to express themselves, paraphrase if necessary, according to the linguistic behavior of educated native speakers. At the end of one year (two semesters in Intermediate Arabic 1 & 2) we expect our students to reach solid intermediate proficiency in all skills stated above.
It covers the Arabic script and sound system, more advanced grammar rules, and the study of samples of modern Arabic literature and the press. We will use an audio-lingual approach designed to develop the four skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing in an integrated way by the use of dialogues in realistic situations and class interaction. Drills in reading, writing, listening and speaking Arabic are enhanced by the use of CDs/DVDs.
(2) COURSE CONTENT:
Identifying â€œAl-Jathrâ€ (root) wa â€œAl-Waznâ€(pattern) as two grammatical terms, the use of Arabic dictionary according to the roots of words, Ordinal numbers derived form cardinal numbers through the â€œwaznâ€ and â€œJathrâ€ system, Use of words to express conditions, the pattern of Comparative and superlative degrees, The form and meaning in verbal â€œawzaanâ€ (patterns), Subject-Verb agreement, Sentence complements.
Beside the grammar, there will be various samples from authentic Arabic texts taken from magazines, newspapers, TV channels, Internet websites etc. There will be a significant amount of new vocabulary words and their use in sentences. Arabic stories, speeches, life style and daily life schedule of some leaders. Biography of different ministers will be presented with their portfolios in the Arab states. In brief, the course comprises on a variety of Arabic language, grammar and culture.
(3) LEARNING OUTCOME OF ARAB 2311:
ï€The ability to speak about yourself, your life, and your environment, to initiate and sustain conversations on daily- life topics.
ï€The ability to read simple, authentic texts on familiar topics and understand the main ideas without using the dictionary, and have confidence to guess the meaning of new words from context and other clues.
ï€The ability to write informal notes and essays on familiar topics connected to daily life.
ï€The ability to comprehend and produce accurately the basic sentence structures, to acquire a working knowledge of Arabic grammatical structures and to apply these structures in speech and writing.
ï€The ability to correct persisting pronunciation problems and familiarity with the differences in sounds and basic structure between formal and spoken Arabic.
ï€A general standing of different aspects of Arab culture connected to everyday life, including culturally important expressions commonly used among friends and acquaintances.
