Preserving Compassion in Modern Medicine: The Promise of Healthy Survivorship

Wendy S. Harpham, MD, FACP is a doctor of internal medicine, long-term cancer survivor, and an award-winning author. Ongoing illness forced Dr. Harpham to redefine her career in the early 1990s. She turned to writing and speaking as ways to continue to educate, comfort and inspire others. From both sides of the stethoscope, Dr. Harpham has explored how patients, caregivers and healthcare professionals can strengthen clinician-patient bonds that help patients become what she calls “Healthy Survivors”—namely, patients who get good care and live as fully as possible. Whether writing, speaking or serving on a committee, Dr. Harpham offers valuable insights and suggestions that further her mission of “helping others through the synergy of science and caring.”

Dramatic advances in science and technology have enabled clinicians to routinely cure or control many once-fatal or life-altering diseases and injuries. Yet many patients are dissatisfied with their medical care, often complaining about a loss of compassion. Harpham will discuss a variety of forces driving a wedge between modern patients and their physicians. Then she will offer her insights and suggestions on healing clinician-patient bonds.
