From the ideas and experiences that shaped our nation to the landscape that quietly defines it, American Landscape and the American Dream is a visual examination that aims to expand our understanding of America, its dreams, its landscape, and the intersections of the two. The American landscape has been translated in varied ways throughout the history of photography: from the traditional landscape, namely the idealized vision of nature's beauty as depicted by Ansel Adam; to the vernacular landscape, architecture and language engaged with the everyday rather than the monumental as documented by Kim Stringfellow.  These disparate approaches and their contrasting visual results share correlations in terms of concept, in their reflection on the ethos of America and the ever-changing interpretation of the American Dream.

The Comer Collection in the School of Arts and Humanities at UT Dallas was initiated in 2004 through the gracious donation of Marilyn and Jerry Comer.  This wide-ranging archive, comprised of over 300 photographs and hundreds of books and journals serves as a resource for graduate students pursuing research in the area of photographic practice and contemporary art.  Documentation of exhibitions organized from the collection is available at
