Posed Beauty, photographs by Rocquel "Roxy" Dijon Carpenter

OPENING RECEPTION:  March 25, 2016, Friday, 6:30 – 8:30 pm

Posed Beauty presents photographs that critique idealized images of women found in advertising and social media; the sitters adopt common poses, which are transformed through exaggerated, intense color. Using varied lighting and cosmetics, as well as techniques to slim the body, smooth the skin, and transform color, the photographer aims to present a hyperreal image of beauty only possible through digital intervention. She highlights these alterations, through the copying, editing, and layering of digital fragments of the figure. The artist states: "With all the picture sharing applications at our fingertips on social media, we have the ability to alter or enhance the original image to make it more appealing. In terms of women’s and men’s appearance, what is wrong with the original? As a female who has battled with body/image issues, I feel that the unique qualities we all offer are very important to magnify."

Bio: Rocquel Dijon Carpenter is a resident of the Dallas/Fort Worth area. She received an undergraduate degree in Art and Performance from the University of Texas at Dallas with a visual arts concentration in photography and video production.
