The Center for U.S.-Latin America Studies and the Consulate General of Mexico, Dallas presents a talk by Dr. George Henson of the University of Oklahoma on Sergio Pitol’s The Magician of Vienna. Dr. Henson’s translation of Pitol’s Trilogy of Memory, published by Dallas-based Deep Vellum Press, marks the first appearance of Pitol’s works in English and has garnered Dr. Henson wide critical praise. A panel discussion with Consul Victor Arriaga and Dr. Ignacio Ruiz-Perez on the life of Pitol as a cultural attaché will follow the reading.

Dr. George Henson is a translator of some of Latin America’s most important literary figures, including Alberto Chimal, Juan Villoro, Yoss, Andrés Neuman, Leonardo Padura, Yuri Herrera, Daniel Saldaña, and Elena Poniatowska. His translations have appeared variously in The Literary Review, Asymptote, The Guardian, The Kenyon Review, Words Without Borders, and World Literature Today, where he is a contributing editor.

Dr. Henson holds a BA in Spanish from the University of Oklahoma, an MA, also in Spanish, from Middlebury College in Madrid, and a PhD in literary and translation studies from the University of Texas at Dallas.  He is currently a lecturer at The University of Oklahoma where he teaches classes in Spanish language and translation and serves as Translation Editor for Latin American Literature Today.
