Artist Statement/Description: Nicole Reusser aims to photograph today’s culture, the experience of “living within screens.” She defines this arena as a space where people dwell at times to escape from reality. Simultaneously, she observes how daily tasks can only be accomplished through use of this technology. For the artist, the reliance on mobile screens leaves people stagnant in the present. She considers how the blue glow emanating from a screen almost takes on an ominous presence within a given space. Screens begin to replace the role of a friend or become an all-seeing eye, witnessing the user's activities. Her images comment on the relationship between the two-dimensional world and the user's detachment from reality.

Bio: Nicole Reusser is completing her degree in Visual and Performing Arts from the University of Texas at Dallas. She has a concentration in Visual Arts with an emphasis in Photography; her practice involves both digital and black & white film processes. Her photographs have been featured in exhibitions in the Dallas/Fort Worth Metroplex and she also works as a freelance photographer. Frequently, she has adopted the role of the director by constructing the scene to be photographed. In her current series, she takes a step back and allows the camera to convey the apparent reality of everyday life as technology competes for the attention of her subjects. Growing up in one of Texas' smaller towns, she cherishes tradition while challenging the impulses that drive our present day's momentum.
