Maker's Mark: The Masterful Drawings of Texas Artist Karl Umlauf

Terilingua Shrine

Friday, October 5, 2018 – Saturday, November 10, 2018,
Venue: The new SP/N Gallery at Synergy Park North 2
Admission: Free
Season: 2018-19

Reflecting on the signature drawings of renowned artist and Baylor University Professor Emeritus/Artist in Residence Karl Umlauf, the SP/N Gallery presents 50 years of his ‘Masterful Drawings’ on paper.

Reception: October 5, 6:30 – 8:30 p.m.

From the Mining camps of Terlingua where ‘quick silver’ cinnabar (mercury) was harvested to fuel the war efforts leaving many border Mexicans workers with tuberculosis and cancer (reducing life spans to 29-32 years on average) – to the death camps of Warsaw, Karl Umlauf’s evocative drawing/assemblages resurrect an inhumane memory of a past not to be forgotten. A gargoyle from the west bell tower of the Notre Dame Cathedral reprimands a fearful family of elephants  in ‘The Scolding of the Innocents’ while in another drawing series from the Waco Mammoth National Monument Site, Umlauf records the excavation of their distant ancestors. These and a series on the ‘romancing of an industrial age gone by’, reclamation drawings for ravaged oil exploration sites, and the beautiful fluid drawing forms for the early vacuum formed plastic prototype sculptures Karl Umlauf pioneered, are all part of this absorbing drawing exhibition.
