"Understanding and Misunderstanding: Poland’s Holocaust Laws"

At the beginning of this year, the Polish government passed a series of laws regulating how the Holocaust and the Second World War can be discussed and studied in Poland, with punishments for violation including fines and prison sentences.  The laws generated—understandably—a wave of international controversy in the European Union, Israel, and the United States pointing to rising Polish antisemitism, and the necessity of the unrestricted study of war and genocide in eastern Europe, where the Holocaust largely took place.  This controversy continues.  Where did these laws come from and how has the Holocaust been understood in Poland since 1989, when it was first freely discussed? What do restrictions like these mean, coming 75 years after the uprising in the Warsaw Ghetto, and what do they mean for our ability to deepen and preserve our understanding of Jewish life, the war, and the Holocaust in Poland?
