Black History Month - Research & Film Series: Roots, Episode 1

Episode 1 of “Roots” (2016) will be presented, with introduction by Ms. Madiina Ssali.

Ms. Ssali will discuss the presence of Islam via "Arab slavery" in East Africa. She will explain how this slavery is racialized much like the Atlantic slave trade and how historians have discussed the issue of the slave trade in East Africa. This introduction will offer comparative historical context for the film’s portrayal of Islamic influence in West Africa prior to the Atlantic slave trade.
