Through the Lens: Found Object/Readymade

Francesca Brunetti Kristy Peet

Saturday, January 21, 2017 – Saturday, February 25, 2017, 12:00 p.m.
Venue: CentralTrak, 800 Exposition Ave, Dallas, TX 75226
Season: 2016-2017

Reception: Saturday, January 21, 8:00 – 10:00 p.m. This exhibition will explore the use of photography and video in contemporary art to re-contextualize the object through approaches adopted by Surrealist and Dada artists: the designation of the found object and the readymade. The designation of the readymade upsets the mass-produced object’s functionality: engaging in play while disrupting work; incorporating humor; challenging the definition of art by presenting works that are ready-to-go—chosen and then recontextualized. Meanwhile, the identification of the found object connects to the unconscious, often tapping the historical context of an earlier era, the supposed recollections of a previous owner, which inform the current viewer’s awareness. These actions address the concept of authorship, while questioning the definition of art, and the place of the object in commodity culture. The use of photography and video in contemporary art to re-present the object frames it a second time, echoing the relationship between selection and presentation of the object and image. The exhibition features artists including Susi Brister, Francesca Brunetti, Rachel Cox, Shannon Duncan, Paho Mann, and Kristy Peet. Gallery hours are Saturdays from noon to 5 p.m. and by special appointment.
