Nuclear Okra will be paying tribute to longtime guitar benefactor Russell Cleveland, whose generous contributions to the world of Classical Guitar have benefited a far-reaching public with UTD as its epicenter. Nuclear Okra is a flute & guitar duo featuring local favorites, Larry Hammett and Miranda Arana. They play a lively fusion of folk, flamenco, balkan, jazz, and classical genres. Their concerts feature beautiful flowing video-collages that add a visual dimension to their musical compositions. Nuclear Okra has performed locally and internationally, in Bosnia-Herzegovina, Spain, Armenia, Greece, France, and Turkey.

Bio:

Nuclear Okra is an Oklahoma based flute & guitar duo featuring Larry Hammett and Miranda Arana. Both artists are faculty members of the University of Oklahoma. They draw on extensive experience and their mastery of a wide variety of musical styles (renaissance, jazz, flamenco, Latin, Balkan, classical, folk) to weave a musical tapestry of exotic and familiar sounds, infused with exciting improvisation and original compositions. Their concerts often feature beautiful flowing video-collages that add a stunning visual dimension to their musical compositions. They have performed locally, nationally, and internationally, most recently at music festivals and concerts in Greece, Spain, Armenia, Turkey, and Bosnia Herzegovina.

Larry Hammett is coordinator of guitar studies at The University of Oklahoma. He has performed and given master-classes in France, Mexico, Argentina, Greece, Serbia, and throughout the United States, and is a recognized expert in classical, jazz, folk, and pop guitar. Mr. Hammett is co-founder of two festivals in Greece: the Unlimited Music & Arts Festival and the Paros International Guitar Festival. He has spent the past six summers collaborating with Flamenco guitarists in Spain. Mr. Hammett’s compositions range from solo guitar, jazz, avant-garde, and music for modern dance. His six albums (Brazos Island, The Larry Hammett Quartet, Fantasias Felines, The Larry Hammett Quartet featuring Genie Jones, Musiques a Voir, and Live At The Grand House) are aired world-wide and can be found on Itunes, Spotify, CD Baby, Digital Cable Radio, Pandora, as well as a host of other licensing organizations. He has also served as producer/arranger on numerous pop and classical albums.

Miranda Arana, originally from western New York, is a professional flutist and teaches World Music at the University of Oklahoma. After receiving classical training at Eastman School of Music, she went on to discover her passion for improvisation and world music. She has traveled extensively and performed locally, nationally and internationally with Irish, Middle Eastern, Latin American, Tibetan and Vietnamese music ensembles, including The Phong Nguyen Ensemble, Dadon, Ladies at Play, Banish Misfortune, Arabesque, Alma Latina, Nur, and most recently with Nuclear Okra. Her performance venues have included Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Smithsonian, and Symphony Space.  Her captivating playing is featured on the Ladies at Play albums Once Upon A Waltz and Swimming Down the Stars, and on the Arabesque albums Glen Road to Cordoba and A Turk in Galway, available on iTunes, CDBaby, and BandCamp.
