Music Theory and Composition
The theory series at UT Dallas begins with Theory I (MUSI 2328). Incoming students need a basic knowledge of music fundamentals. Students in the Music Concentration continue their studies of harmony, phrase structure, melody, part writing, ear training and sight singing in Theory II (MUSI 2329) and Theory III (MUSI 2330). Students then take Advanced Theory and Keyboard Skills (MUSI 3328) for advanced harmony and composition, analysis of representative works, keyboard harmonization, ear training and sight singing.

Advanced Topics in Music (MUSI 3342) Topics will vary and may include theory and composition, a specific composer, or a genre such as guitar literature, new music or jazz. Prerequisite: Completion of 050 Creative Arts Core. For more information, contact Michael McVay.
Creating Music (MUSI 4348) Students interested in music composition in a technological setting should take Creating Music (MUSI 4348), which offers studies in the techniques of composition and songwriting. Prerequisite: MUSI 2328 or instructor permission. For more information, contact Mary Medrick.
