Director's Corner

Erin Dougherty

Homecoming is right around the corner, February 1-7. While we have organized a pretty stellar line-up of events, including our upcoming Alumni Night with the Mavs on February 4 (check out this month's featured story for more information), you should also know about the dozens of opportunities welcoming you back to campus throughout the year.

Opportunity #1: UT Dallas Alumni Relations
I'd be remiss if I didn't mention our own program first. Alumni Relations offers a myriad of opportunities throughout the year to reconnect you with UT Dallas, your fellow alumni, current students, and your favorite professors and staff members. Come to a networking event, volunteer with us, sign up to mentor a student, find other alumni in the online alumni directory, or call me up and let me know what you want to do. Our alumni network is as strong as we make it. Take some time this year to connect with UT Dallas. Visit the UT Dallas Alumni website.

Opportunity #2: The UT Dallas Career Center
The Career Center is a one stop shop for career services. The Center's staff will review your resume, proof your cover letters, mock-interview you, career coach you, and give you access to an online database of current job openings across the country, specifically selected for UT Dallas alumni.

If you're in the Dallas area, stop by one of the upcoming Career Expos. The recruiters, many of them also UT Dallas alumni, come to these fairs specifically to recruit UT Dallas students and alumni. Check the calendar on the front page of this newsletter for dates, times, and locations.

The best part about all of the career services listed? They're all FREE to UT Dallas alumni. Visit the UT Dallas Career Center.

Opportunity #3: The UT Dallas Activity Center
If your New Year's resolutions include a healthier lifestyle, the UT Dallas Activity Center is here to help. UT Dallas alumni receive discounted rates (currently $81 per semester or $215 per year) for full access to the Activity Center's workout equipment, basketball, racketball and squash courts, and indoor pool. The Activity Center also offers a wide range of fitness classes, including yoga, pilates, water aerobics, and dance. All you need to purchase your alumni membership is your free Alumni ID card, which you can pick up at the Comet Center, located on the second floor of the Student Union.
Visit the UT Dallas Activity Center

Opportunity #4: McDermott Library
We're fortunate to have access to the incredible research, and leisure, resources of McDermott Library. UT Dallas alumni can stop by McDermott Library anytime to search the library catalog, peruse over one million volumes on file in the library, and gain on-site access to over 200 databases, 400,000 electronic books, and 38,000 electronic journals. Just like the Career Center, it's all FREE to UT Dallas alumni. If you make a donation of $100 to join the Friends of McDermott Library, you'll also receive a library card and special Friends privileges.
Visit McDermott Library.

Opportunity #5: Events, Lectures, and Continuing Education
Your education doesn't stop just because you graduated. Attend one of UT Dallas' many world-class arts performances. Listen to a lecture hosted by any one of our outstanding schools or centers. Audit a class that you've always wanted to take (or re-take). The Alumni Calendar and Comet Calendar are great sources of information about University events.

I'll bet you didn't know that alumni receive $10 off most arts and performance tickets, or that most of our lectures are free and open to the public, or that auditing a class at UT Dallas costs just $100. Take advantage of those benefits!

If you feel like you've heard about all of these opportunities before, you probably have. I bring them up often, so that we're all aware of how our connection to UT Dallas continues to benefit us. Now that you know, please share these opportunities with a fellow alum. By coming back and giving back, we're helping UT Dallas create the future.
