Language in Motion

FOR FAMILIES

Thank you to the junior scientists and their families who have participated in our studies and helped us learn about language and motor development in all kinds of children.

Here is what you will do in some of our studies at Callier Center at The University of Texas at Dallas.

In some studies, children will look at pictures and stories and talk with little markers on their faces and on special sports glasses. Many children have worn these markers. Over 300 children have participated in our studies!

In other studies, children may talk with their hands or clap their hands or play a drum.

Sometimes, children play with puppets and talk into a microphone.

Kids Wanted! We are seeking people to participate in the following studies.

Language and Motor Development and Learning

Wanted: Children aged 4 to 5 years to participate in a research project on language and motor development and learning conducted by Dr. Lisa Goffman in the Callier Center for Communication Disorders and the School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences at The University of Texas at Dallas. We are looking for children with speech and language difficulties and also those who are developing speech and language typically. The child’s primary language needs to be English for this study.

The goal of our work is to understand motor and language learning, so that in the long-term we can develop better therapies for children with speech and language difficulties. This study will take one to ten one-hour sessions, all taking place at the Callier Center in Dallas or in Richardson. Children will receive a toy and parents will be paid $20.00 for each session. Children will also receive a free speech, language, and hearing evaluation. For more information, please contact Lisa Goffman at (972) 883-3052 or e-mail her at [email protected].

Word learning

Wanted: Children ages 2 years and 4-5 years to participate in a research project on word learning conducted by Dr. Lisa Goffman and Sara Benham in the Callier Center for Communication Disorders at The University of Texas at Dallas. We are looking for children whose primary language is English. Children who have language difficulties, as well as children who are developing speech and language typically, are invited to participate.

The goal of our work is to understand how children use word and sound cues to learn new words over time. This study will consist of two 30-45-minute sessions, all taking place at the Callier Center in Dallas or in Richardson. Children will receive a toy and parents will be paid $10.00 for each session. Children will also receive a free speech, language, and hearing evaluation. For more information, please contact Sara Benham at (972) 883-3052 or [email protected].
