The Gallery as Host
Friday, Sep 7, 2012 - Friday, Oct 6, 2012
9 a.m. - 10 p.m. Location: AS 1.1

This exhibition at The University of Texas at Dallas takes its title (adapts it) (mutates it) from an essay by the American literary critic J. Hillis Miller, "The Critic as Host". This essay was first published in the journal Critical Inquiry in 1976 and later revised and published in the collection Deconstruction in America (1979) In this essay Miller exp[lores the relationship between critic and text-- between source material and interpretation. The "host" of the title acting both as traditionally understood in the realm of a guest/ hospitality concept as well as a biological model where the role of the critic as a parasite to the host is explored. For this exhibition I would like to investigate the nature of the gallery as a source/ originator of place but also as the site from which works of art draw their power and influence. The particular idiosyncrasies of the space at UT Dallas will be explored to expand upon the role and function of works of art and gallery in their host/ parasite relationship. Within the gallery as a whole smaller galleries and other entities will "invade" the space to break up (and break down) the usual methods for presentation. Works within these galler(ies) will range in media from video and sound to photography text and site specific installation.
