Professor Wright is the author of an award winning creative nonfiction book, Fire on the Beach: Recovering the Lost Story of Richard Etheridge and the Pea Island Lifesavers, a NY Times Notable Book, among other distinctions. It recovers a stirring story of African American participation during the Civil War. Most recently, his novel, Away Running, has been selected as the Outstanding International Book of the Year by the United States Board on Books for Young People. It is a most timely examination of race and issues facing Muslim youth. He will be reading from an in-progress novel that tells the story of the Union army’s "African Brigade," a unit made up of former slaves, and their three-week long raid into northeast North Carolina, from where most of the men had fled bondage.
