Physics Colloquium: Inflation Ends, Whats next?
Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2017
4 p.m. - 5 p.m. Location: SLC 2.303

Dr. Mustafa Amin (Rice)

How did inflation end ? What happened between the end of inflation and production of light elements ? This post-inflationary period in the early universe present a glaring gap in our cosmic history, but can be probed directly and indirectly in the future.

After an overview of this fascinating period and potential consequences, I will focus on two aspects of my recent work: [1] For a broad class of "simple", observationally consistent inflationary models, I will present general results regarding: (i) Nonlinear fragmentation and soliton formation in the inflaton field, (ii) the equation of state of the universe after inflation, (3) potential observational consequences of these dynamics. [2] For sufficiently “complex” models, I will highlight a new statistical technique to calculate the energy transfer from the inflaton to daughter/spectator fields during and after inflation (motivated by Anderson localization in condensed matter systems with disorder).
